Real-time Oncology Insights From Medisafe
We all know cancer impacts many lives. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there were approximately 14 million new diagnosed cases in 2012 alone. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally with over 8.8 million cases in 2015. Medication adherence is a major industry problem, and solving it is crucial for the pharmaceutical industry.
At Medisafe, we address non-adherence holistically, understanding patients on an individual level. Recently, we took a look at our data to see what insights we could gather on oncology medication adherence. Here are a few of the questions we asked and answers we found through our research:
What are the 15 most adherent countries for cancer medications?
Based on data from Medisafe users, we found that the United States is among the lowest of developed nations in reported oncology adherence. The countries with the highest reported oncology medication adherence rate were Switzerland, Italy and Spain.
Does day of the week affect cancer medication adherence?
While Mondays and Wednesdays had the strongest adherence rates, weekends were challenging for medication adherence for Medisafers.
How does hour of the day affect cancer medication adherence?
Medisafe found that among patients using the app, the highest reported oncology adherence rates are prior to breakfast and dinner hours, specifically around 5 a.m. and 4 p.m.
How do adherence rates differ based on the type of cancer?
Patients with thyroid cancer were found to have the highest adherence rate at 96%, while patients with pancreatic cancer tended to have the lowest adherence numbers at around only 60%.
How does the number of cancer medications a patient is taking influence adherence?
Unlike other therapeutic areas, Medisafe found that oncology medication adherence increases as the number of medications increase, with a 5% difference from 1-2 at a time and 6+ at a time.
What are the top 10 cancer drugs with the highest adherence?
Medisafe also explored adherence based on drug company, drug name and treatment and found that Amgen and Novartis hold two spots each in the top 10.
