Medisafe Demonstrates Significant Impact on Medication Adherence in Medically Underserved Populations
New Study Results Highlight Key Benefits for Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Leaders
BOSTON – Feb. 4, 2025 – A new study published in JMIR Human Factors has revealed promising clinical results showcasing the Medisafe medication adherence app’s efficacy in improving medication adherence and health outcomes for patients with chronic illnesses in medically underserved populations.
This research presents a strong case for the integration of digital health technologies, like Medisafe, into clinical practices, particularly for populations facing barriers to healthcare access.

The findings provide valuable insights for pharmaceutical companies, life sciences executives, and healthcare providers looking to leverage digital tools to enhance patient engagement, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs.
The study, which evaluated the Medisafe app’s performance in a cohort of patients receiving care at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in the northeastern U.S., demonstrated substantial improvements in medication adherence and medication self-efficacy, with patients reporting high patient satisfaction and ease of use with the app.
These results come at a time when chronic diseases are becoming an ever-increasing burden on healthcare systems worldwide, and digital solutions offer a scalable way to address adherence challenges in vulnerable populations.
Key Findings from the Study:
- Improved Medication Adherence: The app led to a significant improvement in medication adherence for participants. 93% of patients reported that the app’s medication reminders helped them take their medications on time, a crucial factor in managing chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.
- High Patient Satisfaction: All participants (100%) expressed a willingness to recommend the Medisafe app to family and friends, citing its ease of use, helpful features, and positive impact on their ability to manage their health.
- User-Friendly Design: 93% of participants found the app intuitive and easy to navigate. Features like daily reminders, medication educational content, and real-time adherence tracking were particularly appreciated, enhancing patient engagement and improving clinical outcomes.
- Additional Features for Enhanced Support: While the app’s “Medfriend” feature—designed to notify a designated friend or family member when a medication dose is missed—was underutilized (used by only 2 participants), those who did use it provided overwhelmingly positive feedback about the support it provided in improving adherence and ensuring timely intervention.
“Mobile health apps like Medisafe can have a transformative impact on chronic disease management, particularly in communities where healthcare access is limited,” said Christa Hartch, PhD, RN, FNP-C, the lead author of the study. “By enhancing medication adherence, these tools can help patients better manage their health, which has the potential to reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the healthcare system.”
This pivotal research utilizes the gold standard in clinical trials with a randomized controlled trial (RCT) assessing the efficacy of the Medisafe app in improving self-reported medication adherence and medication self-efficacy in a diverse patient population with multiple chronic conditions. This randomized trial included 30 patients who used the app for one month, after which they completed a survey assessing their experience with the app.
“We are thrilled with the outcomes of this study, which clearly demonstrates that Medisafe ia a vital part of the healthcare ecosystem—especially for underserved communities, said Omri Shor, CEO and founder of Medisafe. “As healthcare systems around the world struggle with the escalating costs of chronic disease, solutions like Medisafe offer a scalable way to improve patient outcomes, increase adherence, and ultimately reduce those costs. This study further reinforces our commitment to supporting patients in managing their health more effectively.”
